Description
That Which Surrounds Us: Selections from the Brandywine Art Prints, 1982-2013
In partnership with the Benson Latin American Collection, That Which Surrounds Us: Selections from Brandywine Art Prints, 1982–2013 delves into two elements central to the human experience—space and time. Shown in two parts, AGBS’ Idea Lab hosts “Surrounded by Time,” while the Benson Latin American Collection features “Surrounded by Space.” Both exhibitions highlight personal expressions of these natural elements while showcasing the diverse array of fine art prints included in the Brandywine Art Prints Collection. Sometimes indistinguishable, yet still distinct, factors of space and time shape our identity and inform how we view and operate in the world.
The works presented in “Surrounded by Time” express ideas about legacy, heritage, and our connection to the past. Viewpoints ranging from an individual lens to communal perspectives draw attention to the transgenerational impacts of time. Pulled from a collection of over 100 prints, the artwork on display employs a variety of media to interrogate ancestral themes, including digital collage, mixed-media collage, silkscreen, and offset lithograph. Featuring artists like Howardena Pindell and Betye Saar, “Surrounded by Time” explores how people create meaningful connections to the past.
Opens: Feb. 2, 2019

The Art Galleries at Black Studies are open to all ages and stages of education, whether undergraduate, graduate, or adult learners. The exhibition would also be appropriate for Signature Courses, as gallery tours of Christian-Green are largely interactive and push students to transition from high school to college-level learning. This exhibition would be ideal for classes to explore concepts of diaspora, race, gender, and identity. As a print show, it’s also a great way to learn about printmaking and its history, especially with political and social movements.
