Austin Shakespeare presents Ibsen’s Hedda — A New Adaptation
Experience the journey of Ibsen’s masterpiece through a new adaptation of Hedda, set in 1950, from Austin Shakespeare’s Artistic Director Ann Ciccolella.
A recent bride returns from her honeymoon to her new home to find her secret lover has returned to compete with her academic husband. Hedda is well-known as a cool character who is trapped by society’s conventions; now she is required to be a model wife from the pages of a magazine to create a happy life. Starring Gwendolyn Kelso (“Maggie,” Cat on a Hot Tin Roof) and Cliff Miller, new to the company, as Lövborg, a decadent man now reformed. Scenic Designer Evonne Esther Griffin is transforming the intimate Rollins Theatre into the lovely living room that becomes a cage for Hedda. Resident Lighting Designer Patrick Anthony promises to fire up the stage! Guest Artist Raymond T. Schultz (“Claudius,” Hamlet), will play the cunning “Judge Brack.”
The rest of the company includes Helyn Rain Messenger (“Phebe,” As You Like It) as “Mrs. Thea Elvstead;” Chuck Winkler (“Duke,” As You Like It) as Hedda’s husband “Tesman;” and Bennie Braswell, new to the company, as the maid, “Leeza,” who will also add live violin accompaniment.
