Collecting Black Studies: An Exhibition
Presented by Art Galleries at Black Studies
Description
Collecting Black Studies: An Exhibition
Collecting Black Studies: An Exhibition takes inspiration from the Art Galleries at Black Studies’ recent publication, “Collecting Black Studies: The Art of Material Culture at the University of Texas at Austin.” Like the publication, the exhibition is organized around four central themes—abstraction, identity, resistance and transition. Each section is thoughtfully contextualized with short written passages penned by Professor of Art History Eddie Chambers. Some of the works on view are featured in the publication, and others are recent acquisitions we are pleased to present for the first time in the Christian-Green Gallery.
This show features an important collection of artwork that is housed right at UT Austin. It gets into the history of Black Studies at UT, and the artwork deals with themes of the Black diaspora, migration, resistance, and visual representation.
Opens: Jan. 21, 2021
Closes: May 14, 2021
